Am Wochenende 7./8. Oktober 2023 fanden im Humboldt Forum die Thementage »Post/Sozialistische Paläste« statt. Künstler*innen und Wissenschaftler*innen aus Bukarest, Kyjiw, Prag, Sofia und Warschau und anderen Städten nahmen die Paläste in diesen Städten in den Blick. Der Umgang mit dem architektonischen und kulturellen Erbe der Paläste ist so vielfältig wie die Gesellschaften Mittel-, Ost- und Südosteuropas. Welche Rolle spielten die Gebäude vor und nach 1989? Ein Wochenende mit Literatur und Videokunst, Indie-Pop aus Bulgarien, Elektro-Beats aus der Ukraine, Gesprächen an runden Tischen, spannenden Diskussionsveranstaltungen, faszinierenden Dokumentarfilmen und 1.000 Puzzleteilen pro Palast.

In fünf Paneldiskussionen, kuratiert von der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung, blickten Besucher*innen des Humboldt Forums zusammen mit Gästen aus den jeweiligen Ländern auf die Kulturpaläste in Warschau, Kyjiw, Belgrad und Minsk. Dabei erfuhren sie mehr über die sozialistische Idee der Paläste. Es ging u.a. um urbane Debatten, Revolutionen im städtischen Raum, internationale Diskurse, politische Proteste, Staatsgewalt und schrumpfende Räume für Kultur.

An 12 runden Tischen haben wir uns mit den Palästen in Berlin, Bukarest, Kyjiw, Prag, Sofia und Warschau beschäftigt und tauschten uns über Transformationsprozesse nach 1989, den Weg in die Europäische Union, deutsche Supermarktketten und einiges Anderes aus. Wir sind stolz darauf, folgende Expert*innen (in alphabetischer Reihenfolge) dabei gehabt zu haben: Kristine Andra Avram, Thomas Beutelschmidt, Piotr Goldstein, Robert Grünbaum, Haruna Honcoop, Paul Jeute, Pavel Karous, Michaela Lakova, Kateryna Mishchenko, Evgeniya Molyar, Michał Murawski, Lubomir Peytchev, Janka Vogel und Voin de Voin. Jede*r Einzelne war ein großer Gewinn.

Fünf Schreibtandems, bestehend aus Autor*innen unterschiedlichster Herkunft, begaben sich im Sommer 2023 auf gemeinsame Erkundungstour. Sie trafen sich und unternahmen Führungen durch Stadt und »ihren« Palast. Die ihnen gestellte Aufgabe lautete, einen literarischen Text über das Thema »Palast« zu verfassen, immer aus ihren unterschiedlichen Perspektiven heraus und im Dialog miteinander. Warum Literatur? Literatur vermag es, komplexe Ereignisse der Vergangenheit erzählerisch und in Wortbildern zu verdichten: Welche Bedeutung hatten Kulturpaläste und Kulturhäuser für sozialistische Lebenswelten? Welche ideologischen Hintergründe gab es für den Bau? Die Palastgeschichten erzählen davon.

Die Klänge am Samstagabend standen im Zeichen lässiger Elektro- und Bassbeats.

Die Dokumentarfilme »Paläste für das Volk« erzählen die wechselvolle Geschichte von den drei sozialistischen Volkspalästen in Belgrad, Bukarest und Sofia.

Ein zeitgenössisches und künstlerisches Bild der kulturellen, architektonischen und auch zivilgesellschaftlichen Nutzung der Paläste in Bukarest, Kyjiw, Prag, Sofia und Warschau zeigt die Videoinstallation »Kultur – Macht – Kommerz«.

Beide Tage wurden begleitet von graphicrecording.cool – Tiziana Beck+Johanna Benz –, die mit ihren Zeichnungen einen ganz anderen Blick auf dieses Wochenende ermöglichen.

Carolin Kaever gehört zum Programmteam »Der Palast der Republik ist Gegenwart«. Geboren und aufgewachsen im Nordosten Berlins studierte sie Amerikanistik, Hispanistik sowie Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaft an der Universität Leipzig und arbeitete danach vorwiegend an Theatern in Berlin und Baden-Württemberg. Seit September 2021 ist sie Programmreferentin beim Projekt »Palast der Republik« der Stiftung Humboldt Forum.

At the weekend of October 7-8, 2023, the theme days »Post/Socialist Palaces« took place at the Humboldt Forum. Artists and scholars from Bucharest, Kyiv, Prague, Sofia, Warsaw and other cities focused on the palaces in these cities.
The treatment of the architectural and cultural heritage of the palaces is as diverse as the societies of Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. What role did the buildings play before and after 1989?
A weekend of literature and video art, indie pop from Bulgaria, electro beats from Ukraine, round-table talks, exciting discussion events, fascinating documentaries and 1,000 puzzle pieces per palace.

In five panel discussions, curated by the Federal Agency for Civic Education, visitors to the Humboldt Forum looked at the Palaces of Culture in Warsaw, Kyiv, Belgrade and Minsk together with guests from the respective countries. They learned more about the socialist idea of the palaces. The topics included urban debates, revolutions in urban space, international discourses, political protests, state power and shrinking spaces for culture.

At 12 round tables we discussed the palaces in Berlin, Bucharest, Kyiv, Prague, Sofia and Warsaw and exchanged ideas about transformation processes after 1989, the way to the European Union, German supermarket chains and some other things.

Five writing tandems, consisting of authors from a wide variety of backgrounds, went on a joint exploration tour in the summer of 2023. They met and took guided tours of the city and »their« palace. Their task was to write a literary text on the subject of the palace, always from their different perspectives and in dialogue with each other. Why literature? Literature is able to condense complex events of the past narratively and in word pictures: What significance did palaces of culture and houses of culture have for socialist lifeworlds? What was the ideological background for their construction? The palace stories tell about this.

The sounds on Saturday evening were dominated by casual electro and bass beats.

The documentary films »Palaces for the People« tell the eventful story of the three socialist People’s Palaces in Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia.

A contemporary and artistic picture of the cultural, architectural and also civic use of the palaces in Bucharest, Kyiv, Prague, Sofia and Warsaw is shown in the video installation »Culture – Power – Commerce«.

Carolin Kaever is part of the programme team »The Palace of the Republic is Present«. Born and raised in the north-east of Berlin, she studied American Studies, Hispanic Studies and Communication and Media Studies at the University of Leipzig and then worked mainly at theatres in Berlin and Baden-Württemberg. Since September 2021, she has been a programme officer at the »Palast der Republik« project of the Humboldt Forum Foundation.
