Obwohl das Parlament das h\u00f6chste Verfassungsorgan der Republik war, traf es keine eigenen Entscheidungen und hatte keinen politischen Einfluss. Die Volkskammer, die nur wenige Male im Jahr tagte, diente haupts\u00e4chlich der formellen Legitimation von Beschl\u00fcssen der SED-F\u00fchrung. In Folge der Friedlichen Revolution im Herbst 1989 wurde der Plenarsaal zu einem Ort demokratischer Arbeit der im M\u00e4rz 1990 ersten frei gew\u00e4hlten Volkskammer der DDR. Bei wichtigen Entscheidungen kamen zwei Gl\u00e4serne Wahlurnen zum Einsatz beispielsweise bei der Abstimmung \u00fcber den Beitritt der DDR zum Grundgesetz der Bundesrepublik am 23. August 1990. Die durchsichtigen Boxen symbolisierten das fortan transparente Vorgehen in der Volkskammer.
