Der staatlich-repr\u00e4sentative Charakter des Palastes legte es nahe, das politische Leitbild des k\u00fcnftigen Kommunismus zur Schau zu stellen. Unter der Leitfrage \u00bbD\u00fcrfen Kommunisten tr\u00e4umen?\u00ab, einem Lenin-Zitat, waren 16 K\u00fcnstler beauftragt worden, gro\u00dfformatige Gem\u00e4lde f\u00fcr die Palast-Galerie im Foyer zu schaffen. Unter dem Titel \u00bbKrieg und Frieden\u00ab thematisierte der Maler Ren\u00e9 Graetz die Bedrohung des Friedens in seiner Arbeit und griff damit den in der DDR oft proklamierten Traum \u00bbNie wieder Krieg!\u00ab auf. Graetz verstarb vor der Fertigstellung seiner Arbeit 1974, sodass der Maler Arno Mohr das Werk beendete. Die unterschiedlichen Handschriften der beiden K\u00fcnstler sind hier gut zu erkennen: Die an Picasso erinnernden Figuren von Ren\u00e9 Graetz werden in den von Arno Mohr oft bevorzugten gedeckten Farben zur\u00fcckhaltend koloriert. Nach der Schlie\u00dfung des Palastes im Jahr 1990 \u00fcbernahm der Bund alle Kunstwerke des Hauses. Seither k\u00f6nnen Museen diese als Leihgaben in ihren Ausstellungen zeigen.
